Another winemaker I encountered at the French Wine Discoveries tasting was Christian Chabirand. He created his 14 Hectare vineyard from scratch having grown tired of working in various larger wineries including a stint at – and here he pulls a face- Freixenet. Trained as an oenologist, he found a plot of land in a marshy area of the Poitevin not really known for its wine. There are Poitou wines in the vendee but La Chaume sits outside these areas on a spot that used to be an island but that was also the site of an old priory.

Christian began planting in 1997 but it was 2004 before he sold his first wines.Completely organic he likes the wines to be just the expression of the terroir, the grape and the season. Charmingly on the bottle the symbol on the label is taken from a signet ring of an abbess who lived in the priory in the Hundred Years War.

With a production process dedicated to bringing out the taste of the place and a philosophy that respects nature and treats wine as soul nourishment these unusual wines are a delight and gaining recognition.
